Day 5 - Flexible or Not

So often we hear how flexible Eisley is.  Not really.  One of the typical characteristics of Down syndrome is hypotonia.  Not only does this mean her muscles lack tone, stamina and are slower to respond, but they don't hold her joints in place as well as they should either.  Although it is sure cute and funny to watch Eisley, we do try to discourage movement that seem extraordinary.  Too much wear and tear on her joints now may lead to arthritic conditions later.

I had to quit polishing Eisley's toe nails because she had chewed off the polish on her big toe, which most kids do, she just doesn't have to bend her leg to do it.

I haven't yet captured it on film, but I'm sure Eisley was thinking, "Oh yeah, I can do that too!"

Sporting her Hip Helpers
The hip helpers are made of spandex and look like a tube skirt with a seam in the middle.  They help keep Eisley's leg in alignment rather than spread open.

In addition to the OT visits from Early Intervention, we started going to weekly PT appointments a couple months ago.  Each day we work with Eisley to help her strengthen her muscles.  We are so blessed to have a girl who is very driven to succeed and discover the world.  She often is working independently on sitting and getting up on all fours.  Having 3 older siblings is a wonderful asset for her as well.  Each of them enjoys playing with her.  If we show them what to work on, they can get some extra therapy in too!  Eisley loves being on the floor and gets cranky when she is held too much.  Sometimes the girl just needs some space to play!

That picture of her sleeping in the seat cracks me up! Just that she could fall asleep like that and keep her leg up without having gravity pull it back down. Crazy.
